DIY Wood Slice Photo Christmas Ornaments (Easy Rustic Craft for the Holidays)
One of my favorite Christmas traditions is decorating my Christmas Memory Tree, adorned with DIY wood slice Christmas ornaments featuring photos that capture over 25 years of family memories. Each branch tells a story of love, laughter, and the moments that make this season so special.

- 3.1 – 3.5 in Wooden tree slices with pre-drilled holes
- String or twine
- Printed photos (laser-printed, not inkjet, to prevent smearing)
- Mod Podge
- Foam or paint brush set
- Permanent marker for labeling the back with year or memory

Step 1: Prepare Your Photos
Before you begin, gather your favorite holiday photos. I use Canva to create perfectly sized image circles for my ornaments. Each one measures about 3.2 inches across, which fits most of the wood slices nicely. You can fit about six photo circles per 8.5×11-inch sheet of cardstock.
To make things easier, I’ve created a free Canva photo template that you can use. Simply upload your photos and drag them into the pre-sized circles. It saves so much time and ensures your pictures come out perfectly aligned.
Print your finished sheet using a laser printer or have it printed at a photo center like Wal-Mart or Walgreens. Inkjet prints can smear when Mod Podge is applied, so laser printing is the safest option for best results.
Step 2: Attach the Photos
Brush a thin, even coat of Mod Podge onto your wood slice. Carefully place the photo circle on top and smooth it out to remove any bubbles. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Seal and Protect
Once the first layer is dry, apply two light coats of Mod Podge on top of the photo. Let each coat dry completely before adding the next. This gives your ornament a smooth, durable finish that protects the photo and adds a subtle shine.
Step 4: Add Twine and Personalize
After your ornament has dried, use a small paperclip or tool to poke a hole through the photo that aligns with the pre-drilled hole in the wood slice. Thread your twine or string through and tie it securely.
On the back, write the year or memory with a permanent marker. It’s a small detail that makes each ornament a keepsake to treasure.
